Brussels spit out the memo at dawn. EU citizens to be ready. Three days. 72 hours. No help.
For what? “Resilience,” the man said. “Self-reliance.”
Meanwhile. Stockholm. Grey sky. Dry mouths.
The State plays it slow. Little fanfare. No anthem. Disaster prep. A 32-page pamphlet.
The warning: “Be ready,” it said. “Anything could happen.”
Could it be war? Blackouts. Disease. Cyber hits. Possible invasion. Sabotage. Financial collapse. Everything. Anything.
Called it “Totalförsvar.” Total Defense. Clean sounding. A jolt to awaken. Certainly trouble.
Every home the same kit: Rope. Iodine. Bandages. Freeze-dried meat. Bucket. A glowstick. Enough? Not on your life. Never enough.
Leadership before the flag. Pronounced, “Preparedness is peace.”
The meaning: you’re on your own.
The citizens listened. Nodded. No panic. They stocked up. Bought axes. Canned herring. Firewood vanished. As well powdered milk. Cigs and crossbows.
Civil defense guy looks tired. “Always plan for Russia,” he said. “Still, Finland worries us more.”
Of course, an app. Alerts when birds swarm crazy. Or if Moscow sneezes. A glitch emptied five supermarkets. But no one killed the app.
Not really safety. It’s supervised fear. Retailed in recyclable bags.
